I’m continuing to share my key learnings from Simply Business Summit with you this week and today we’ll be learning from publicity queen Christina Lenkowski from Publicity X Christina. (If you missed last week’s 3 takeaways on Social Media, you can read those here.)
Christina is a podcast publicist who joined us all the way from Boise, Idaho to teach us how to step into our area of expertise and pitch ourselves as podcast guests.
I’ve been podcasting for a long time and host multiple shows, as most of you know, but some of the insights Christina shared with us even blew my mind! Let’s get to it.
My 3 Biggest Podcasting Takeaways
Podcasts reach around 9 Million Australians. Considering our population is only 25 million, this is unbelievable! During COVID, popularity of podcast listening in Australia grew by 15% with 20% of people listening to podcasts daily, and the average Aussie listening to almost 2 hours of podcasts each week. (I know last week I said “video is where’s it’s at”… but we need to add podcasting to that list!) Statistics also show that 88% of people cancel all distractions while listening to a podcast. If we want a potential client’s undivided attention, podcasting gives us that!
While I’m a huge fan of podcasting, I know a lot of people have a great fear of it. This is primarily around the concern that they’ll say something wrong or embarrass themselves. But as Christina pointed out to us all — most podcasts are pre-recorded. If you really stuff up an answer, you can simply ask to give it another go. We can’t expect more people to buy our programs / products or book our services if we’re not getting out there in front of them. And again, in Christina’s words “What if not being visible was the worst that could happen?”. She makes an excellent point. We have so much to gain by increasing our visibility, and podcasting can help us do that.
While you can use an expert like Christina to pitch to podcasts on your behalf, it’s not essential. Podcast hosts are simply looking to interview people who can provide value to their existing audience. If you have an area of expertise and a point of difference to share, pitch yourself! Christina recommends proposing 3 – 5 topics (with a short description) when reaching out to other podcasters to be featured. And most importantly, take a genuine, active interest in their podcast and social media content before pitching! It will go a long way to showing that you care about them and respect the energy they’ve put into building a loyal following—which you’re asking for the opportunity to tap in to.
So… I’d love to know… Has Christina convinced you about the benefits of podcasting yet?!
