Do you shiver at the mention of the word “budget”? If so, you’re not alone. Most of my coaching clients do, too, as did I in the early years of my businesses.
It’s okay to not love dealing with the numbers side of your business, but that doesn’t mean you can avoid it all together! Just ask my beautiful business mentor, Glenda, who has been making me make budgets for the last 12 years. (I know that she’s laughing at the irony of me now, teaching other people how to make budgets!)
But the reason I’m now so passionate about it is because the only way you’ll ever be able to reach your business and personal goals is if you understand your cash flow. And the only way to manage your cash flow is if you have a budget!I
Now, stay with me here… because I know some of you are already thinking I’m going to start talking about Excel spreadsheets and you’d rather go and clean your toilet than open an Excel document. It doesn’t have to be that way!
There are basic budgets you can download all over the internet. Take whichever approach makes you feel comfortable and appeals to you, but the goal is to start with a document into which you can plug your figures, and then commit to a set amount of time each week during which you’ll focus on your numbers. (I love the approach of Financial Fridays.)
Don’t overcomplicate things. You can start with something as simple as grabbing your bank statements or opening your invoicing software and just looking at what money is coming in and what money is going out of your business.
