So if you follow me on Instagram you’ve probably seen my April Instagram Stories content just exploding with Disney… am I right? #sorrynotsorry.
Firstly, I know I speak from an incredible place of privilege to be taking this trip in the first place, so let’s put that up front. But I wanted to share with you the story behind this magical adventure, as I think you might be able to relate…Even if you’re not a fan of Disney!
Back in 2020 we were counting down the days until a much-anticipated family vacation to the US. And by counting down… I’m talking about a 4-month, 120-page countdown on the wall where the kids would rip a page off every day as we inched closer and closer to getting on that flight.
(I think you know where this is going, right?)
We were down to the final 12 pieces of paper announcing our days until departure when the world shut down and our trip was postponed indefinitely. It was 3 years ago now, so Patrick was only 4 at the time and I think he asked every day for the next 2 years “Are we going to Disneyland today?”.
We had to keep explaining that we would find a way to go again in the future, but no, “Today isn’t the day we go to Disneyland”. But as you’re reading this (if you’re reading it in April!) WE ARE HERE. WE ARE DOING IT. WE ARE AT DISNEYLAND.
We’re here as a family in Anaheim with a large group of our dancers from Port Macquarie and they’ll be dancing at Disneyland and Universal Studios, which will be incredible, and then we will have lots of family time in the park together as well.
After our time here, Heath and the boys head to Hawaii where Lucinda and I will be joining them… but first we’re having 3 days together in New York City as an add-on to our ballet school trip.
I’m taking Lucinda to see her first broadway musical, Wicked, and then we have front row tickets to see Lea Michele in Funny Girl, which is pretty special. If you’re not familiar with her, Lea Michele was a star in the hit TV-Musical series Glee, and during COVID when Lucina and I were in isolation together, we binge-watched Glee. So this feels like a really special, full-circle moment for her to see Lea, in person, on stage right in front of her. Pinch me!
After that we’re also seeing MJ The Musical and The Lion King, before jumping a flight to Hawaii to catch up with the boys and celebrate Heath’s birthday together as a family.
Our trip ends up being 3 weeks in total, and although it’s only just started, I know it’s going to be worth every minute of the challenging previous few years we’ve all endured, and that very-long countdown to departure!
If there’s something going on in your life or your business that you’ve had to say “Not now” to at the moment, let this be a reminder to you that it doesn’t have to mean “Not ever”.
Setbacks are frustrating, sometimes even devastating. But as the saying goes “the comeback is always better than the setback”.
Here’s to working on those comebacks… no matter how long they take to bring to fruition.
