Running your own business is decision central. All day every day, you are making decisions. I often collapse at the end of any given day fatigued… from decision making. They call it decision fatigue, it’s a thing!
Some days it’s easy; What time will I send this email? Do I really need another snooze on the alarm? What should I have for lunch? Other days it’s tougher; making decisions where you know people are going to be affected. Decisions that mean that I am disappointing people. Decisions that are for the benefit of my business but that others may not agree with. Decisions that I make to benefit me, my family, my staff, my clients and my business—It’s no wonder that someone ends up upset at the end of the day.
The past 6 months have meant many tough decisions for me. Decisions that I never expected to have to make when I started my business. Decisions that have kept me awake at night and decisions that have made many people angry at me. I have made people angry, made people ecstatic and everything in between.
Running your own business is a world away from selling ice cream. It requires a tough skin, it requires the ability to explain yourself and your decisions over and over again and to put your head on your pillow at night knowing that you did the best you could.
As consumers I wish we remembered a lot of the time that the people we deal with in business are just doing the best they can with what they have.
I encourage you, as you read this, to remember the same thing when it comes to your career or your business.
People are going to be angry, people are going to be elated, people are going to write cranky emails and people are going to buy you flowers. It is all part of being in this world—making tough decisions and living with the consequences.
So if you are putting off making a tough decision because you are worried about what people will say, what people will think or how torn up you will be making up worst case scenarios in your head, put on your big girl panties today and get it done.
Do the best you can with what you have and then be brave enough to face the consequences. You can do it, you are not alone.
