I was working with a coaching client recently who really wanted help finding ways to “make life easier”. 

In her own words, “I know that I’m almost drowning but I can’t see a way clear to get out of it”. 

When I asked her what her ideal work week would look like…. ***crickets*** 

Just the thought of imagining a different reality felt so out of reach in that moment that she hadn’t allowed herself to dream a little and think about it. 

This is such a common reaction. Why waste your energy thinking about something you couldn’t possibly achieve? Have you ever thought that?

Here’s how you can start changing that way of thinking in 3 steps. 

1. Think about how you’d like your work week to FEEL different. Keep it simple, for example; less stressful, less rush in the morning routine with the kids.

2. Write a list of everything that, if changed, could begin to make that feeling a reality. Don’t get hung up on how you’re going to change it. Just write it down.

3. Now organise this list from easy, “implement now” changes through to the more challenging ones. Break the challenging items down into smaller targets and put a timeline to them. 

I promise you when you look at this list written out in black and white on paper, it won’t seem anywhere near as overwhelming as it does in your head. 

You just need to start. 

Here are some of the changes my coaching client has gone on to achieve: 

• She starts work an hour later each day so she can get her children off to school without it being a mad rush. 

• She’s hired several more staff.

• She works a 4-day week. 

• She takes a holiday with her family every year. 

Every one of these changes felt *absolutely impossible* when we first started working together. But now? They’re her reality and she’s living her ideal week. 

Creating your ideal work week is possible. Sometimes it just takes an objective perspective and someone to challenge your existing way of thinking (and doing) to kick-start the process of change.
