I’m going to be vulnerable for a minute and admit something to you….
When I first started working with my business mentor, Glenda, I didn’t show her my financial forecasts—because they didn’t exist! 🙈 I was trying to present myself as a business woman so admitting I didn’t know how to create a financial forecast was, in my mind, akin to failure!
Nope. Not happening. Hide that fact. Let’s talk about other things.
But as we built a rapport together and I realised how much I trusted her, the time came when I told her everything. Her response? “Let me help you fix that.”
Zero judgement.
From that moment on she helped set me on a path of understanding my numbers right from the very basics of creating and understanding the line items on a profit and loss statement.
Why am I telling you this story? Because that fear of being vulnerable or “not successful enough” is the number one reason so many women hold back from getting the support in business they truly need!
You might have said something like, I’ll get a business coach when:
I’ve got all my ducks in a row
I hit $X revenue target
I feel more confident in what I’m doing
I’ve hired my first couple of employees
But here’s the truth.
Personally, I have 3 red flags for when I know it’s time to sit down and check in with Glenda.
🚩 Everything is feeling really hard.
🚩 I have a major block or challenge I need to talk through.
🚩 The thought of finding a spare hour to devote to coaching seems impossible. (This is the BIGGEST one and usually the strongest indicator I need a “tune up” in my business.)
Some people look at the cost of business coaching and think, “Oh, that’s too far out of my reach”. But a good business coach is going to be able to help you earn that money back 10 fold, because the things that you should be working on with a business coach are the things that you don’t know. (Like the importance of financial forecasting, and how to do it!)
If you’re feeling self conscious or nervous about investing in a coach for yourself, here’s my best advice:
Pick someone that you imagine yourself feeling comfortable with.
Pick someone whose business success you’d like to emulate.
Pick someone whose values you feel align with yours.
“How do I know this if I’ve never met them?” Ha! I knew you were going to ask.
You can get a great sense of who people are based on the way they communicate in their marketing and social media. Take a holistic approach here; you want someone who you gravitate towards not just because of their business success, but because you feel you can connect with them on a more personal level.
Finally, pick someone who offers some kind of coaching package so you can test if the relationship is right for you. Working with a business coach does NOT have to be a long-term commitment, but I do recommend meeting with someone at least 3 times before moving on so they have the opportunity to learn about you and your business, and you have the opportunity to see results from the recommendations they’re making.
So if business coaching has been on your radar and you’ve kept putting it off or convinced yourself it’s for people whose businesses are more successful than yours, to that I say RUBBISH.
Remember how last week we talked about putting ourselves first and role modelling for our kids? This is your chance.
