Have you heard of Parkinson’s Law? It’s the idea that work expands to fill the time available for its completion.
So, if you give yourself three hours to write a press release, it’ll likely take three hours. But if you only have 40 minutes—you’ll get it done in 40. This applies to so much in life. Chances are, you spend what you earn too. It’s a powerful mindset shift.
This was a game-changer for me in time management. If I want to be intentional with my time, I have to set realistic boundaries for how long I spend on tasks—and then stick to them. That takes discipline.
Think about your goals when it comes to how you spend your time. Are you okay answering emails at 10pm? Or do you want to fully switch off after work and not check in again until the next day?
And more broadly: what does your ideal week look like? Want to see your mum once a week? Catch up with a long-distance friend? Unless you *intentionally* carve out space for those moments, they won’t happen. Harsh truth—but it’s true.
When you plug your goals into your ideal week, they become part of your life. You make them happen.
So ask yourself: What do you want to include in your ideal week that needs its own time block? And where can you trim time elsewhere to make room for it?
A great place to start is with a simple time tracking exercise. Download the template here.
This month, I’m hosting my signature time management program, Guilt Be Gone. It’s the exact process I used to take control of my schedule, find more productive hours, and finally ditch the stress, chaos, and guilt I was drowning in.
Guilt Be Gone runs online the evenings of July 27 & 28. Spots are limited, and I’d love for you to join me in designing your ideal week and making it real.
