I’m going to preface this blog post by saying I don’t typically watch sporting documentaries! BUT…. my husband, Heath, is very passionate about basketball, so I indulged him and together we’ve been watching the Michael Jordan documentary, The Last Dance.
At first I thought I was just being the supportive wife, but I soon realised I was completely hooked! Not only is the documentary beautifully made and takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions, but it’s an insight into an incredibly competitive mindset.
Most inspiring of all, I found, was the way Jordan always played the long game.
One example that comes to mind: After getting knocked out of the championship one year his coach said to him “Have a good Summer. Let me know when you’re ready to get back into it?” to which Jordan replied “See you tomorrow”. He trained from that next morning with the determination to win the next championship. And he did.
And he took this same approach time and time again. Whenever he’d get a bee in his bonnet; he’d become hyper focused on fixing it.
It got me thinking: What if we all used that kind of focus, determination and clarity to make little steps in moving towards our big goals? How much more could we achieve if every setback fuelled us to fight harder and gave us motivation instead of knocking us down and out?
I encourage you to try my new motivational tactic! As you move through the world and face new challenges, ask yourself “What would Michael Jordan do?”. Hopefully you’ll be fuelled, like I have been, to work harder, play the long game, and keep the end goal in your sights.
