In Part 3 of this 3-part instalment about the importance of vision, mission and values, we’re going to focus on determining your business values. BUT, if you haven’t read Part 1 about Vision, and Part 2 about Mission, I recommend you pop back to those first and then come back to rejoin us.
Now you’re ready, let’s talk about values
Your values do a great job of selling you and your business to your ideal customer or clients, as they help communicate exactly what it is that makes you different and stand out from your competitors.
Similar to the exercise we did to help with your business Mission, I want you to take a look at the words in the table above and highlight those that speak to you. Ideally you’re looking for 3 – 5 key value words.
Once you’ve selected your keywords, ask yourself why you selected each word?
While your business values might be linked to or influenced by your personal values, it’s important you don’t automatically assume they are the same. Keep your business, your team and your ideal customers or clients front of mind when doing this. If you’ve selected more than 5 words, this consideration might also help you shorten the list!
Write down the various ways each of these values shows up in your business.
For example, one of our values at Port Macquarie Performing Arts is “Equality”. In answer to “How does this value show up in my business?” I say the following:
Dance for everyone. All ages and abilities, including special needs.
We are a family.
We include everyone.
We celebrate uniqueness.
We offer a variety of classes.
We provide a variety of opportunities for our dancers.
Ideally, you should be able to list 3 or more statements that reflect each of your values.
You’ve done it! You’ve now prepared your vision, mission and values for your business!
You’re probably now wondering what do you do with all of this information you’ve uncovered and developed?
Use it and communicate it! You now need to tell the world!
These are not post-it notes you put on the corner of your desk or files you stick in a draw.
Your vision tells the world where you want to take your business.
Your mission is your guiding beacon to help you get there.
Your values are the pillars you stand by in attracting and serving your clients and customers.
